Music and the Spoken Word on SABC TV

This Sunday 12 June, the world’s most beloved choral broadcast will be coming to South African airwaves.

Music and the Spoken Word, which is broadcast live from the Conference Centre in Salt Lake City every Sunday, will be available on South African Broadcasting channel SABC2 at 10am.

The show uses the music of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir to share uplifting messages to viewers all over the world. The beloved Mormon choir is joined by accomplished organists, guest artists, the orchestra on Temple Square, and a narrator who shares a message that can be enjoyed by all, regardless of religious background.

The half-hour program will occupy the Sunday 10am slot on SABC2 from 12 June until 11 September.

“Featuring modern and traditional arrangements of spiritual, patriotic, popular, classical and contemporary music coupled with timely, inspiring prose, Music and the Spoken Word becomes an uplifting, rejuvenating destination that listeners and viewers return to every week,” say its organisers on its website.

The first broadcast of Music and the Spoken Word was held on 15 July 1929. It has continued to air since then, making it the longest-running uninterrupted network broadcast in the world.

Unsurprisingly, it has attracted a loyal following, comprised of both LDS church members and non-members alike. One listener in California said: “I just wanted to tell you what an inspiration your weekly broadcasts are for me. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square together are a world-class virtuoso ensemble on par with the world’s great symphony orchestras.”
